Lookalike was recorded in a binge fashion, with all tracks being written, recorded, and mixed in marathon sessions that would start early in the day and often go late into the night, for about 2 days at a time.
Altered mental states were experienced, some intentionally induced and some not, the latter often being highly unwelcome. Sleepless nights and empty days, and a few otherworldly experiences in between.
The instruments used on this album are : Octatrack MkII, Yamaha VSS, Casio CZ-1, and mixer-generated feedback from a Tascam Model-12. As for Pedals used to manipulate the mixer feedback I used; Pigtronix Philosopher King (very helpful for generating envelopes), MXR Stereo Chorus, Boss DD-20 Delay, Moog Moogerfooger Ring Modulator, Electro Harmonix Frequency Analyzer (original Lead version), Z.Vex Ringtone Ring Mod, and internal effects from the Octratrack. The samples used were sequenced on the Octatrack and made from a combination of any of (and only of) the other instruments listed above. Usually there were a few tracks on the Octatrack dedicated to MIDI-sequencing the Casio CZ-1. Once the samples and midi were recorded and sequenced, the tracks were recorded live, with the VSS and Feedback channels often serving as a layer for improvisation while I essentially did a “dub” on the Octatrack. All tracks were recorded to and mixed minimally (for levels and eq) in Ableton Live.
As this is what i consider the “final installment” of The Hirshfield Series, I would recommend listening to this music in connection to the 5 releases in this serious that came before. “Lookalike” is the product of me having adequate gear to record the realized vision that i worked on for so long, making due with the broken gear that I had, which both inevitably and ironically shaped the sound of this music.
